Foster Adoption

Did you know?

There are approximately 115,000 children available for adoption from foster care right now.

In 2008, almost 30,000 children aged out of the foster care system...without finding an adoptive family.

Most children wait 3 or more years in foster care.  Most of them move at least 3 times.

The average age of waiting children is 8 years old.

Did you know?

Around 40% of adults in the United States have considered adoption.

If 20% of those considering adoption would take that step, every child would have a family.

We took that step.  We completed the training, answered lots of questions (some very personal questions), had our home inspected, were fingerprinted, had background checks and finally were approved to be adoptive parents.  We looked at pictures of children, attended adoption gatherings and read many profiles of children waiting to be adopted.

Then in June of 2008, our case manager asked us to attend an adoption gathering so that we could meet 3 siblings that would be there.  We met many children that day.  Most were part of a sibling group or were pre-teens or teenagers...all considered hard to place.  4 of the children we met were siblings; 2 boys and 2 girls ranging in age from 2 to 8.

Those 4 children moved in with us in September.  We finalized their adoptions in April of 2009.  Their younger brother moved in with us in June of 2009.  We finalized his adoption in October of that same year.

I hope to tell you about our journey through this blog.
